Laphroaig Single Malt Whisky

Laphroaig single malt whisky is from the south coast of the Scottish island of Islay, where they make strong, smoky whiskies. The distillery has been producing its whisky since 1815 and only uses three ingredients: malted barley, water and yeast. That's where it's unique is that those ingredients are processed. Barley is dried using burning Islay peat (which gives it its characteristic smoky flavor) and local water and salty sea-side warehouses give it a unique flavor as well.

All of them are single malts which are distilled at one distilling floor and use only malted barley therefore they are flavoured as one place, one house style. In the glass, you'll taste peat smoke, some vanilla sweetness from ex-bourbon oak and sea spray. It's dynamic but very well-rounded and the lengthy warm finish is what draws back the fans. It has had spectacular personalities including Bessie Williamson, who managed the distillery for almost 20 years. It is a reward for patience: The first drink is a surprise and the second an explanation.

Laphroaig Whisky

It is important to try Laphroaig whisky expression by expression. The Laphroaig 10 Year Old is a great first step, smoky, sweet and salty at the same time. Quarter Cask is enjoyed in smaller casks, which creates a creamier, rounder and deeper tasting dram. Triple Wood makes three varieties of oak to impart sweetness and fruit, and the older bottles and releases from Cairdeas make for more interestingly complex lof notes for the more advanced connoisseur. They are all unique, so you will need to taste them next to each other and discover which is your favourite!

It's what matters is serving it well. First try it neat, and then add a few drops of water to release the greasier aromas underneath the smoke. A perfect complement to smoked salmon, oysters, blue cheese and dark chocolate, and a fantastic addition to a smoky Old Fashioned. The distillery's humorous side and faithfulness to its fans also extends to the Friends of Laphroaig, where worldwide fans get a square foot of Islay land.
